Zip the Cow exceeded expectations

Over 400 people ‘zipped the cow’ in support of Sue Ryder last weekend, shooting down a 270m wire at speeds of up to 40 miles per hour at the Cow and Calf on Ilkley Moor.

Over £55,000 was raised for the charity, which is the primary provider of specialist palliative care for the people of Ilkley.

Participants ranged in age from 8 to 76 years old, and included representatives from the 3 headline sponsors; 24/7 Nursing; RDC Solicitors; and Woodhouse Grove School.

Ilkley Town Councillor Peter Mate and Ilkley's Town Cryer Isobel Ashman took on the challenge and despite some wobbly legs, tears, and occasional foul language, all 415 participants found the courage to step off the iconic cow rock.

Many were doing the event in memory of a loved one who had received care from Sue Ryder.

Everyone who signed up prior to the event had to pledge to raise at least £50 in sponsorship, however many had exceeded £1000, and several teams had exceeded £2000, which helped lift the event income to above £55,000.

Sue Ryder's community fundraising manager at Manorlands Hospice Andrew Wood was delighted with the success of the event, he said "It was great to be able to bring one of our big fundraising events to the Ilkley area, and the response has exceeded our expectations. We hope that the event on the 29 of August can match this success, and increase awareness of the huge amount of care we provided to families in LS29, when they need us most. Thank you Andrew".

The 29 August event is currently sold out, but Andrew hopes the event will return annually.

Early last week, Rotary Club of Ilkley Wharfedale presented a cheque for £1,000 to Andrew from Sue Ryder following a generous collection from customers outside at the Ilkley Springs Lane Tesco store.
