Yarndale organisers plan for September event in Skipton

Skipton's yarn and wool festival is set to return this autumn with plans in place to host the event at the town's auction mart.

Organisers say they're "cautiously optimistic" that the event will be able to take place this year on the 25th and 26th September and say they're following all the Government advice in their planning.

Yarndale has been running since 2013 at Skipton Auction Mart, bringing together up to 200 exhibitors and showcasing a mix of retailers, manufacturers, craft workers and artisans who travel to the town from across the UK and Europe. Around 8,000 visitors usually attend the event over the weekend - and Yarndale has been recognised for its success, winning the Best Knitting Show/Event for three years running at the British Knitting and Crochet Awards.

As the lockdown continues, organisers of the festival are also trying to inspire people to start a new skill or have a go at something different. They say the pandemic has fuelled an interest in starting to knit and crochet so have launched a series of videos, 'Yarndale Make Along With...' which offer step by step guides to help people.

In the first two videos (see below), Yarndale’s Emma Sandoe follows her own patterns to create a simple cotton cloth both knitted and crocheted. Not only environmentally friendly, the cloth is practical, durable, easy to wash and can be used as a facecloth, dishcloth or general cleaning cloth. Viewers are invited to join along the process together with Emma in real time to create their own cotton cloth, or simply watch to unwind.

Emma says: “Knitting and crocheting have been a life saver for me in lockdown and I feel passionate in introducing this skill to new people as it’s so relaxing and therapeutic. With the shops closed, I have also enjoyed making my own creative presents for my friends and family which they have really appreciated.

“My patterns are suitable for beginners as well as knitters and crocheters of all abilities and to support the videos we are also offering specific ‘Yarndale Make Along With... Kits’ which contain everything a beginner needs to get started and be able to create the cloth together with me. I’m really keen to get new people to embrace this wonderful hobby and to support them in the process.”
