During the period Ilkley Manor House was closed in order to enable essential works to be undertaken an important project took place in February.
This was to remove the paint on the window mullions to expose the original stone. As well as the paint being removed minor repairs to the stone was also undertaken.
This work will stop further deterioration of the mullions and the repairs will help ensure the building remains wind and watertight. Once complete it will also allow detailed investigation to identify what long term repairs are required.
The Ilkley Manor House Trust (IMHT) have been lucky to secure a grant for the full cost of this work from The Pilgrim Trust which is dedicated to support “urgent and further needs of the UK.”
The work was undertaken by specialist stonemasons, Halestone, who have worked on York Minster and Piece Hall in Halifax.
Roger Tilbrook one of the Trustees commented: “We are grateful to The Pilgrim Trust for their support and are fortunate to have secured the services of Halestone to undertake the work. This is an important project as it demonstrates the Trust is focused on the long-term preservation of one of Ilkley’s iconic buildings for the community and visitors.”
The work will stop further deterioration and has allowed minor repairs to be done as shown in the photograph. The work will also permit detailed surveys to be undertaken which will allow the next phase of the work to be planned.
