Skipton's Hinterlands film festival announces 2023 plans

Skipton's three-day celebration of the great outdoors in film will return in March, as the Hinterlands Film Festival reveals some of the line-up for the event.

Organisers have announced the first films and events to join the programme for the festival - which returns for a fourth year between 17th and 19th March.

Events will take place at the Plaza Cinema and Skipton Town Hall across the weekend.

They will include a night of Iranian film, food and music, a screening of the newly-released The Banshees of Inisherin (15) followed by a ceilidh to celebrate St Patrick’s Day, a comedy-horror in a vintage caravan, and lots more. Further events will be announced later in the year.

Geoff Bird, Artistic Director, says: "Hinterlands is all about the great outdoors in films from around the world. Every film in the festival programme is a celebration of incredible rural landscapes and lives, whether it’s set on the remote west coast of Ireland or on a roadtrip across Iran. And of course, Skipton is the ultimate backdrop to Hinterlands with the drama and beauty of the Yorkshire Dales right on the doorstep."

There will be a special St Patrick’s Day celebration at Skipton Town Hall on Friday 17th March with a screening of dark comedy The Banshees of Inisherin (15) followed by a rip-roaring ceilidh. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, creator of In Bruges and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the film follows a feud between lifelong friends on the remote west coast of Ireland.

Audiences can enjoy a special night of Iranian film, food and music at Skipton Town Hall on Saturday 18th March. There will be a delicious Iranian buffet and live traditional music before a screening of comedy Hit the Road (12A), which tells the story of a middle-aged couple and their two sons as they take an important road trip across Iran.

Groups of up to five friends or family can cosy up (or hide behind a cushion!) to enjoy a screening of comedy-horror cult classic Sightseers (15) in The Cinema Caravan, a vintage caravan transformed into a tiny private cinema. The film follows couple Tina and Chris on a romantic caravan holiday across the north of England, which turns into a murderous rampage as they start to kill off fellow holidaymakers. Screenings will be running throughout the day on the Saturday and Sunday.

The team behind Kendal Mountain Festival will host a special night of adventure with a selection of award-winning short films celebrating exploration and travel. The films will be introduced by a member of the Kendal Mountain Festival team and are guaranteed to ignite your desire for adventure! They will also inspire the next generation of explorers with a special event just for families, with screenings of short adventure films for kids.

And families can build a comfy den or blanket fort together before curling up inside to watch the beautiful animated film The Secret of Kells (PG).

The weekend will finish with a film quiz night at the Narrowboat pub on the Sunday evening.

The festival is produced by Wild Rumpus. Its director Rowan Cannon said: "Unique events and screenings are what make Hinterlands so special. We want our audiences to have a really memorable experience at the festival, whether it’s watching a film in a vintage caravan or from a snuggly den that they’ve built themselves. And I can’t wait for the evening of Iranian film, food and music, and to dance away at the ceilidh on St Patrick’s Day. I’d really encourage people to book early as lots of our events have a limited capacity!"
