Skipton Step Into Action founder to turn on town's Christmas lights

A team from a local charity led by Charlotte McKeown will be on the Rombalds Radio stage this Sunday to officially light up Skipton for Christmas.

Charlotte is the founder of Skipton Step Into Action, which was set up in March 2020 to pull together volunteers to support local people during the Covid-19 pandemic.

After initially helping with shopping and collecting prescriptions, the charity moved to tackling loneliness through the lockdowns - and still runs a variety of projects including a wellbeing cafe and befriending service.

Charlotte was selected to turn on the Christmas lights by Skipton Town Mayor Cllr Richard Judge, after the town council asked for nominations to be sent in of local heroes to celebrate.

She told Rombalds Radio: "My initial thoughts were 'wow what an honour this really is'. It's really important to me that it's the team who will be all involved with the switching on of the lights on Sunday because we really are a team.

"We'll all be taking part in the Santa Fun Run beforehand, and it'll be fantastic to do it together."

The switching on of the lights will be the culmination of a festive day in Skipton this Sunday (27th November), organised by Skipton Town Council.

The day will begin with the Skipton Craven Rotary Club's Great Skipton Santa Fun Run, where around 1600 people are set to complete either the 5km or 3km courses around town dressed in santa suits.

Through the afternoon there will be entertainment on the Rombalds Radio stage at the top of the High Street, hosted by presenters Stuart Clarkson, Alex Cann and Nick Babb. Performers include the Hot Aire Concert Band and local singer Callum Spencer.

There will also be a Christmas market on the high street, Real Food Skipton on the canal basin, donkey rides on Otley Street and a funfair at the bottom of the High Street.

The switching on of the lights will be preceded by a Willow Lantern Parade through town.
