Silsden housing decision delayed until after local elections

Friday, 28 April 2023 14:11

By Chris Young, Local Democracy Reporter

A decision on plans for a controversial housing development in Silsden has been delayed until after the local elections over concerns people could make “political advantage” out of the issue.

The planning application by Skipton Properties for 44 homes to be built on land off Hainsworth Road next to the Leeds Liverpool Canal, known as The Willows, was due to be decided by Bradford Council’s Regulatory and Appeals Committee on Thursday.

Outline plans for the development were approved in March 2021.

The latest application included much more detail, and approval is required before any work starts on site.

Silsden Town Council was among those that have objected to the plans.

At Thursday’s meeting Councillor Russell Brown (Cons, Worth Valley) suggested the decision be adjourned until after the election.

He said: “There is too much potential for political advantage to be gained out of this.”

Other members agreed, and voted to move the item to a future meeting, which is likely to be early June.

During the pre-election “purdah” period councils are limited in what they can do, and are prevented from making any major announcements, such as funding or regeneration schemes, that could be seen to influence an election.

Although candidates and parties can issue leaflets or newsletters, they are not allowed to use public money to do so.

It means few council meetings apart from planning and licensing committees are held.
