Riddlesden club named best in area by real ale group

Andy Yuill receives the Club of the Year Award from Colleen Holiday

Members bar The Applegarth at Riddlesden has been named Keighley and Craven CAMRA Branch 'club of the year' for 2023.

The club on Banks Lane was presented with the award on Friday (10th March).

Club president Stuart Probst paid tribute to bar manager Andy Yuill who, he said, had transformed the beer offer since taking over the bar some 18 months ago.

Stuart said: “This is a tremendous accolade for the club and represents the very real progress we have made since Andy took over in 2021. At that time, we had two hand pulled beers available whereas we now have up to five cask ales on offer at any one time – more during special events.”

The club showcased 10 different beers on the night of the award presentation made by CAMRA branch chair Colleen Holiday. The Applegarth was one of four local clubs nominated for the annual award by branch members.

There is also a Pub of the Year category, which this year has been won by The Beer Engine in Skipton. An event to mark the award takes place this Thursday (16th March) at the venue.

Colleen said: “CAMRA campaigns to protect and promote clubs, which are important community assets that promote the social wellbeing of their local area.

“The Club of the Year competition is run with the simple aim of finding the best clubs with the greatest commitment to quality real ale – those which offer a fantastic atmosphere, welcoming surroundings and most importantly, top quality real ale served in great condition.”
