Police warn of bogus fish seller in Silsden

Police are warning residents to be vigilant following reports of a bogus fish seller in Silsden.

The incident happened on Monday 20th July at around 10am in the Banklands Avenue area of Silsden.

Three males approached a homeowner asking her if she wanted to buy fish, a 4th male was in a white van outside the property with a box of fish. The homeowner was asked for payment and asked for the top line for the payee on a cheque to be left blank.

There have been further similar reports of three males knocking on doors in the area and the males becoming aggressive if their products are not wanted by the occupants.

The suspects are described as white males, aged mid-20s, speak in a North Eastern / Newcastle accent. The 4th male was described as a white male, 30s and wearing a white apron. A white Ford Toureno van has also been seen in the area.

Inspector Beecroft from Keighley Neighbourhood Policing Team said: “We are urging residents to remain vigilant if any cold callers approach their homes. Also not to hand over any money or any personal or bank details to anyone they are not expecting.

“If you are unsure always ask for official identification or a contact telephone number. Never feel under pressure, you are under no obligation.

“Make sure you check their identification and if you have any doubts at all about their authenticity ask them to wait while you call the company they claim to work for to verify they are indeed an employee.”

Anyone with any information or concerns is asked to contact the police via 101 or alternatively information can be passed to Action Fraud.
