Plans for future of Skipton sports centre to be put together

Wednesday, 19 October 2022 22:10

By Jacob Webster, Local Democracy Reporter

A masterplan is to be produced for the future development of Skipton’s Sandylands Sports Centre.

The site on Carleton New Road is used by around 25 clubs for sports including rugby, football, cricket, netball, badminton, basketball, jiu-jitsu and squash.

There are also multiple landowners and because of this Craven District Council said it has become “challenging” to plan for how the sports centre can be developed.

The council wants to pay consultants £40,000 of taxpayers’ money to produce a masterplan which it said would involve sports clubs and “be of benefit to all”.

It also said the plan would help the site secure future funding, including more money from housebuilders.

This is called Section 106 money and almost £600,000 has been allocated to the sports centre’s several clubs since March 2018, but only around £189,000 has been spent.

“A masterplan would put the site and its stakeholders in a stronger position for any future opportunities,” the council said in a report.

“Although there is a management committee for Sandylands Sports Centre, there is no mechanism to enable strategic planning for the site as a whole.

“Having an independent organisation working on behalf of the council to develop an overarching masterplan in conjunction with all stakeholders would be invaluable and would be of benefit to all.”

Members of the council’s policy committee will be asked to approve spending the £40,000 on the masterplan at a meeting on Tuesday.
