Keighley residents support moves to keep former college site green

55% of residents who took part in this week's Parish Poll said they didn't want Keighley's new health and wellbeing hub to be built on the former Keighley College site on North Street.

Only around one in six people took part in the vote (16.02%) at polling stations around the town on Thursday evening.

84% of respondents said they did support their being a new health and wellbeing hub in Keighley, but the majority rejected locating it on the land at the corner of North Street and Cavendish Street, with 61% of those who voted saying the piece of land should be recognised as a public open space.

The site is owned by Bradford Council and has been earmarked as the location for the development of a new health hub in the town centre. In advance of this week's Parish Poll, Labour district councillors had warned that the issue was being used as a 'political tool' - and that several million pounds of funding would be lost if the new health facility didn't go ahead as planned on the site.

Keighley MP Robbie Moore was part of the group campaigning to 'keep it green'. Following the result of the vote he said: “Keighley has spoken, and must be heard. This is an absolutely emphatic result, which clearly shows that people right across Keighley want to keep our much-loved Green Space on North Street green. I am so grateful to each and every one of the hard-working campaigners who have done so much to make this result possible.

"What is clear now is that Bradford Council must listen to the clear view of my constituents in Keighley and protect the Green Space from development. We should have never been in this situation in the first place, and they must now give serious consideration to the many brownfield sites we have in Keighley and ensure the Health and Wellbeing Hub is built in a suitable location, so it can provide its important provision as soon as possible.”
