Keighley Creative moves into town's former Argos building

Arts charity Keighley Creative has moved into a new base in the former Argos store on Cooke Lane in the town.

The organisation says the move is a temporary one, while it negotiates the purchase of permanent premises. It was previously in the former Sunwin House building on Hanover Street.

The Argos store was vacated when the catalogue shop closed its town centre branch in favour of the concession inside Sainsbury's.

The facility on the edge of the Airedale Shopping Centre is home to nine art studios, an exhibition space and The Unit - an open-access film production space.

Keighley Creative has invited artists and other creative individuals who are looking for studio space to join the charity as it builds its presence in the town centre. There are currently two unused studio areas and the charity said there is scope to construct more if there is demand for the facilities. It aims to increase the diversity of creatives benefiting from the hub.

Susan Mendoza, chair of Keighley Creative, said: “We are looking to build exciting, friendly, front-facing studios accessible to the community. We are looking for those creatives who enjoy sharing their practice and the opportunity to be part of our Keighley Arts and Film Festival, education programme, studio exhibitions and open days.

“We are very happy with the move and we can’t wait to invite people into the space to see our new home.”

The old Argos building also houses The Unit, an open-access film production space backed by Channel 4 and Bradford Council in partnership with Keighley Creative and Impact Hub Bradford. The facility is designed for the district’s filmmakers and content creators, and a place to improve opportunities for employability in commercial TV and film production.

The Unit aims to create routes to employment in the creative industries for its members and has editing bays, high quality production equipment, and meeting and screening areas for self-scheduled events as well as The Unit’s own programme of events and workshops. It particularly encourages participation by young people and under-represented groups.

Keighley Creative is the charity behind the successful annual Keighley Arts and Film Festival and is already running a programme of events at the new base, including a Christmas baubles workshop.
