*Now cancelled* Keighley Carnival finalises details of first event

The new Keighley Carnival takes place for the first time this Saturday, with the final arrangements now confirmed - though there won't now be a parade through town.

Entertainment will begin from 11.30am at Church Green and in the Airedale Shopping Centre, with Rajasthan Heritage Band performing. They are currently touring the country and recently performed at Glastonbury Festival.

A parade of local groups and bands will then go around Victoria Park from 12.30pm, led by a puppet elephant. Organisers say a plan to have a procession from Church Green to the park is not able to ahead this year but that they hope it can do next year.

At the park there will be a stage show including music from Hit The Lights and Voices of Yorkshire, and an acrobatics by Stage Invaders.

The stage activities will be officially opened by VIP guest, Tracy Brabin - the Mayor of West Yorkshire.

There will also be market stalls and a funfair on the park.

A spokesperson for Keighley Carnival committee said: "The committee has worked tirelessly for over a year to deliver a carnival on the scale that we believe our town deserves.

"We have invested time, effort and money to build an event that showcases the town's talent and celebrates its diversity, as well as guest performers.

"The road procession part of the carnival has sadly been hit with last minute safety concerns which we cannot meet at this late stage of planning. However this will not stop us delivering a great day of entertainment off road.

"We ask the community to support our event by coming to Church Green to watch the entertainment and then to join the celebrations at Victoria Park at 12.30. Moving forward we are determined to bring a carnival procession through the town in 2023."
