Jubilee Festival of Fun in Burley in Wharfedale

The annual Burley Duck Race is taking place on Sunday

For residents and visitors there is a is a packed programme of public events planned in Burley-in-Wharfedale in celebration of the Jubilee.

The official Parish Council celebration is from 4 pm to 10 pm on Thursday 2 June in Grange Park and on Grange Road which will be closed to traffic for the duration. The event will start with a bring your own picnic from 4 pm to 6 pm along with music from Anchor Big Band and free face painting. There will be an artisan and street food market, bars and rides, and it all culminates in the Beacon Lighting Ceremony at 9.45 pm with piper and bugler.

The village takes a break to recover on Friday and returns on Saturday 4 June from 10 am at the library for a Jubilee Jamboree. Between 10 am and 11 am there will be children’s activities from Story Bees on a Jubilee/Nature theme. All morning there will be refreshments and home baking available along with a Jubilee Cake Competition for creative bakers. Please deliver any entries or contributions to the library on Friday 3 June between 11 am and 3 pm, along with contact information. There will be a display of photographs from jubilees through the ages in Burley by The Arts Society Saltaire and a plant and seed swap by Green Shoots. Please feel free to bring any surplus seeds and plants to swap. The library event finishes at 12.30 pm.

Finally Sunday 5 June brings the Civic Service at St Mary’s Church at 10 am. All are welcome. Then the grand finale … the annual Duck Race which has been brought forward to the Jubilee Weekend and begins at 2 pm followed by teas on the Village Green at the east end of Main Street. Access to the race is by foot only via Corn Mill Lane and across the bypass to the riverside. Tickets for the race (£1 per duck) are still available from the Wharfedale Deli in advance and at the event on the day. Funds raised will go towards Burley Scouts and Guides and Burley in Wharfedale Community Trust.
