Hag Dyke Scout hostel to celebrate its 75th anniversary

Hag Dyke Hostel in Kettlewell is the mountain home of the 1st Ben Rhydding Scout Group and is celebrating the 75th anniversary of its opening this year on Saturday 24 September.

The hostel will be open to all visitors from 11am until 5pm and anyone with an interest in or previous connection with the hostel will be very welcome.

The Hostel was bequeathed to the charity, 1st Ben Rhydding Scout Group, in 1947 and has been run by a group of volunteer wardens for the benefit of Scouts and other Youth Groups ever since.

David Shaw MBE, Char of Hag Dyke 75th Anniversary Sub Committee, said: “The day’s main focus will be a special service of commemoration plus memories and future thoughts at 3pm at our Chapel, The Highest in England.

“We will also have a Souvenir booklet, displays of historic pictures & zine displays. A special badge is being designed for the Anniversary and will be on sale on the day. Tea, Coffee & Cakes will be supplied but please bring your own packed lunch etc.

“Wardens will be on hand to show visitors around and to explain the facilities to previous and new visitors.

“There will be transport available promptly at 11am & 2pm from the Field opposite the Garage as you enter Kettlewell. Booking will be required but all that can are encouraged to walk up.

“Clear instructions, maps of routes plus signage and Explorers/young Leaders will be on hand to guide you.

“Use of your own suitable 4 x 4 vehicles up to the site is possible but we please let us know an approximate time and type of vehicle.

“There will be the option for Wardens, Past wardens, Working party, Leaders & Reunion Group ONLY to stay over but there obviously are limited spaces so do make your interest known asap please.

“A new young trainee Wardens scheme will also be explained briefly which is especially aimed at 18 to 30 year olds. Therefore, Explorers and Young Leaders are specially encouraged to attend.

“We are appealing for a few memories of your most enjoyable, first Experiences of Had Dyke and any future versions you have. These will be displayed plus there will be the opportunity to read some of these out at the Service. We suggest twenty to fifty words. We would also like pictures of your visits to Hag Dyke to produce a rolling picture show on the day.”
