Further roll out of anti litter cameras after almost 600 fined

By Chris Young, Local Democracy Reporter

Almost 600 litter louts have been fined after being caught on camera dropping waste from their cars in the Bradford district

“Litter enforcement cameras” have been installed in four litter hotspots of the Bradford district – and another 15 will be installed at different locations over the next two months.

It is part of a crackdown on the slobs who opt to toss their waste on the street – leaving the taxpayer to foot the bill for clearing it, rather than take it home and bin it correctly.

To date, the use of litter enforcement cameras has resulted in 578 fines being issued.

Although the locations of the cameras are not advertised, a report late last year revealed one of the cameras is based on an area of Leeds Road in Bradford, close to several take aways, and had caught 191 people littering in a three month period.

The roll out of cameras follows national legislation introduced in 2020, which allows local authorities to fine registered keepers of vehicles, where litter is dropped from the vehicle.

With a large amount of the litter being packaging from takeaways, the Council’s Environmental Enforcement Team and Neighbourhood Wardens are working with fast food and takeaway businesses to reduce their environmental impact.

They hope to encourage businesses to use less packaging, particularly plastic and to promote anti-litter messages to their customers. They will also be urged to take more for the rubbish dropped by their customers.

Businesses will be encouraged to carry out regular litter picks, with the Council providing litter pickers, gloves and bags. The council will also ensure these areas are regularly cleaned by a mechanical sweeper.

Anyone who witnesses litter being dropped from a vehicle, which they have caught on their dash cam, can report it on the council website – bradford.gov.uk/transport-and-travel/report-issues/report-litter.

Details of how to report this are also on new pay and display parking tickets at council car parks and vehicle messaging boards across the district area displaying anti-littering information over the coming weeks.

Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Portfolio Holder for Healthy People and Healthy Places, said: “Littering from vehicles is both a mindless and potentially dangerous act, which could cause an obstruction to other drivers, as well as looking unpleasant and unsightly.

“The cameras are already proving an effective means of catching offenders, but we also need people to report such incidents and businesses to get on board to echo this message and do their bit to reduce waste.”
