Free sewing workshops to encourage upcycling and recycling

Christmas themed sewing workshops at The Sewing Shed in Ilkley are planned in November and December to encourage upcycling and recycling.

The Sewing Shed is delighted to be hosting two workshops over the coming weeks in association with Love Your Clothes, a national clothing sustainability campaign. Run by environmental charity WRAP, their pilot project exclusive to Leeds ‘Habits for Life’ aims to help citizens to know the value of their clothes and textiles by encouraging them to learn vital repair, refashioning and upcycling skills. The result will hopefully see local people apply what they’ve learnt to the clothes they own so that it stays in use for longer.

Love Your Clothes work with like-minded partners to cut waste, promote sustainability and share knowledge to change the planet for the better. Consumption of clothing has seen rapid growth globally, increasing by 60-100% in the last 15 years. In addition, the number of times each item of clothing is worn before being discarded has significantly increased.

Leonie Pratt, owner of The Sewing Shed, has been a Super Crater ambassador for Love Your Clothes for almost seven years and has worked collaboratively with them in the national press and on national campaigns to educate about recycling textiles. Leonie was chosen to work with the charity to encourage upcycling and recycling to make do and mend to keep clothing out of landfill with her knowledge of garment making and sewing.

There will be two workshops open to local residents aged over 18 who must reside in a Leeds postcode. The workshops are free but places must be booked as workshop space is limited to only 8 students. Attendees will receive a Habits for Life Booklet and haberdashery to complete their project. Sewing machines, notions and expert tuition are all provided.

Saturday 13 November will be Create Your Christmas Jumper : elevating an existing plain jumper into being one suitable for Christmas and Saturday 11 December Make A Tote Bag as a Christmas Gift. Bring along a remnant of fabric or even an old pair of jeans, unloved cushion cover, preloved bed linen or old curtain and make a tote bag fabulous enough to give as a Christmas present or if it's too lovely to part with you could always keep it yourself!

Leonie Pratt comments, `The workshops are open to those who want to learn more about sewing and may even be completely new to sewing but have a passion for sustainability or are intrigued how easy it is to learn to sew’.

The Sewing Shed is situated on Ashlands Road in Ilkley, just a ten minute walk from the rail and bus stations or with free parking at the door. Housed in a former chapel, the bespoke studio is bright and modern and regularly welcomes over 100 crafters a week for expert tuition.
