Final preparations made for Keighley's coronation party this weekend

Keighley Town Council has revealed the line-up for its coronation screening and street party this coming Saturday.

Most of the activity takes place on Church Green, with a screening of the King's coronation in the morning, followed by a street party with flags, bunting and creative crowns adorning the area.

The afternoon will see a 'big lunch' street party take place, with the Mad Hatter providing games, riddles, and all kinds of silly nonsense. Families are asked to get to the street party early, bring a picnic, but share the tables and chairs with others who may be waiting.

The Mad Hatter will be joined by his frenzied White Rabbit friend, scurrying around the town centre, including Airedale Shopping Centre, making announcements, and keeping everyone on schedule. There will also be lots of fun with riddles and puzzles wherever he goes too.

Later in the afternoon, the film Paddington will be shown on the big screen.

Keighley Town Council is encouraging everyone to wear their favourite royal or literary character costumes and there will be £5 vouchers for The Works for the best dressed outfits, chosen on the day at random by the Mayor.

One prize will be provided for the most creative costume made at home from old clothing or waste materials.

The Mayor said, “I can’t wait to see everything for myself. The council makes a big effort to bring everyone together from across the district so we should all make the most of this momentous day”.

Around the Church Green site will be inflatables, Jelliphant, the fire service’s awareness mascot, rides and birds of prey. A tea dance will also be taking place outside the Parish Church and creamed teas will be served.

Finally, there will be local, charitable organisations promoting their community benefit and raising much needed finance with competitions or serving food and drink.

Everyone is invited to bring flags, picnic tables and chairs in case the main street party table is full, as well as umbrellas in case there’s rain. Like all good outdoor productions, the screening will continue unless it’s unsafe to do so.
