Event to teach vital live saving skills

The Hearts in Little Hands team at Airedale General Hospital are once again teaming up with Paula from Ilkley’s PACO First Aid to train people vital skills that can save someone’s life.

Restart a Heart Day is being held on Saturday, October 16 2021, between 9.30am and 5pm on the Bandstand on the Grove in Ilkley.

A spokesperson said: “Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of early defibrillation in the first 3-5mins can increase the chances of survival as high as 50-70%.

“Every year there are over 30 000 out of hospital cardiac arrests with over 80% occurring at the home. The Chain of Survival shows that the sooner you can do something, which is call for help, start CPR and bring the nearest defibrillator to the person, the better the chance of their survival.

“The skills are very easy and we believe ANYONE can be taught how to use them if needed!

If you are passing by the Bandstand in Ilkley on Saturday October 16, alone or with kids or with friends, please come and say hi and let us show you how easy it is!”

Restart a Heart Day campaign started six years ago by the UK Resuscitations Council in attempt to make CPR compulsory in secondary schools. This has now become a reality thanks to tireless public campaigning and voluntary organisations such as British Heart Foundation, St John Ambulance, British Red Cross and ongoing interest from the public.

Organisers would like to offer thanks to the Chairman of the Ilkley Bandstand Trust, Martin Smith, and its governing members for allowing them to use the space on the day!
