Early test for new Ilkley Moor leaky dams

The recent wet weather provided an early test for the large timber leaky dams recently installed high on Backstone Beck close to the Poetry Seat on Ilkley moor.

Friends of Ilkley Moor together with staff from Bradford countryside and drainage services and the Moors for the Future Partnership who installed the dams inspected the area to check that all was well. Everyone was pleased with how the dams had performed.

These dams, together with the small leaky stone dams higher up the catchment and on the beck’s tributaries should help slow the flow of water running into the beck and reduce the flood risk lower downstream in the Ashlands area.

Rainfall and waterflow rates on the catchment will be monitored to record the effectiveness of the structures. Whilst the dams look very prominent at present, over time with silting and moorland plant growth they will soon start to blend in with the moorland landscape.
