Driver praised for quick-thinking after Addingham woman taken ill on bus

A bus driver has been described as a hero after taking rapid actions that may have saved the life of an Addingham woman who collapsed on a Keighley-bound bus from Bradford.

Jan Greenwood was taken ill after getting on the bus home from Bradford on 14th March where she'd been shopping in the city centre.

57 year old Jan from Addingham says: “I remember being at the bus stop and getting on the bus, but despite trying very hard to, I can’t remember anything after that. The next thing I can recall is being on the floor, being helped up by the bus driver.

“I was taken to hospital and allowed home later in the evening. The doctors think I had a focal seizure – I may need an MRI scan to be sure. I had a stroke in 2017 and lost my husband the following year, and I have spondylitis and fibromyalgia so I have difficulty walking.

“Having not been out for over a month I just needed to go into town and do some shopping, and I had no idea it would turn out this way. I want to say a huge thank you to Mark – he really went above and beyond to help me.”

Bus driver Mark Adams said: “I was first aid trained a few years ago, in the military as an infantryman serving in Afghanistan, and did a refresher course in my previous job.

“I didn’t expect it to be needed on an ordinary day driving a bus, but I’m just glad that I could help. A lot of people on the bus didn’t know what to do and turned to me – fortunately I was able to look after Jan until a paramedic team arrived.”

The Shuttle bus route 662 between Bradford and Keighley is run by Transdev’s The Keighley Bus Company.

The bus firm’s General Manager, Alan Isherwood, said: “Our driver’s quick thinking in this situation undoubtedly prevented an already worrying situation from becoming even more serious.

“We ‘re very proud of his fast actions to help our customer Mrs Greenwood – we send all our best wishes to her, and we hope to welcome her to travel with us again when she’s feeling better.”
