Craven rugby duo to tackle Rob Burrow Marathon for Principle Trust

Adam Gillard and Nathan Metcalfe

Nathan Metcalfe from Skipton and Adam Gillard from Kildwick are running their first ever marathon together this month to raise money for the Principle Trust Children's Charity.

The pair, who met as teenagers on a university rugby pitch in the 1990s, have signed up for the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on Sunday (14th May) to raise funds for the Skipton-based charity which supports underprivileged, disadvantaged and disabled children plus those who have life-limiting conditions or who've experienced poverty, trauma or abuse.

Nathan and Adam played rugby together at Leeds Metropolitan University and went onto become teammates at a number of other local clubs before hanging up their boots. Both have previously completed 10k runs but this will be their first marathon.

The 43 year olds have so far raised more than £1,500 and hope to top their fundraising target of £2,000.

The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon starts and finishes at Headingley Stadium this Sunday and will see more than 10,000 participants take to the streets of Leeds. Former Leeds Rhinos player Rob Burrow was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in December 2019 and has since campaigned tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to support other families living with MND.

Nathan says: “We’re looking forward to a fantastic event and to raising as much money as possible to help The Principle Trust fund respite breaks for needy children.”

Also running for the Principle Trust will be friends Jacob Taylor and Austen Thompson, who both work at Harrison Boothman Estate Agents in Skipton. The pair hope to complete their first half marathon distance in less than two hours and aim to raise £500 for the charity.

Principle Trust founder Mike Davies MBE said: "Thanks to the generous support of everyone running to raise funds for The Principle Trust, we’re able to help disadvantaged families across Yorkshire to escape their everyday troubles and create valuable, happy memories."
