North Yorkshire County Council says it will continue efforts to bring footpaths to Sutton Lane, where a schoolboy was killed in a hit-and-run.

Nine-year-old George Lewis was killed on the road - between Eastburn and Sutton-in-Craven - last September as he walked home from the local cricket club with his dad.

Hundreds of residents have since petitioned for footpaths to be introduced, however, attempts by the council to purchase the land required have so far proved unsuccessful.

The council said in a new report that while “excellent” progress to improve road safety has been made with new signage, lighting and road resurfacing, it remained committed to working with Bradford Council on the footpath plans.

It also said the measures already completed “do all they can to improve safety in the meantime”.

The report said: “The proposals were well received by the respective communities and there is an understanding that the intention remains to acquire land to provide footways along the entire length of Sutton Lane, when possible.

“Members of both authorities will continue to engage with the respective local landowners regarding the purchase or acquisition of adjoining land for the footways.”

Sutton Lane is without a footpath for much of its length and pedestrians travelling between Sutton-in-Craven and Eastburn are forced to walk in the road without separation from traffic.

The road resurfacing works were completed last month when street light timings were also amended to provide illumination during all hours of darkness.

Part of the road is the responsibility of Bradford Council which aims to start works on safety improvements on 19 September.

Meanwhile, West Yorkshire Police said investigations are ongoing into the fatal incident on 17 September 2021 when a 49-year-old van driver fled the scene before handing himself into police.

At the time, the driver was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving before being released on bail.
