'Breakaway bill' debate in Commons adjourned until next month

MPs in the House of Commons have again discussed Keighley & Ilkley representative Robbie Moore's proposed law, which would allow a referendum to be held on creating a new local authority.

Mr Moore's "Private Members Bill" received its second reading late last week, with fellow MPs joining the time-limited debate.

There was no response from the government during the debate, which was then adjourned until 24th March for further discussion.

The Keighley & Ilkley MP said: "My Local Authority Boundaries (Referendums) Bill is the result of long-standing campaign across the Keighley and Shipley constituencies to address Bradford Council’s repeated failings once and for all.

"I will not stop campaigning on this issue - as I do believe that we would be much better off with our own local unitary authority which is solely focused on delivering on our priorities.

"My Bill - backed by Philip Davies, the MP for Shipley would give the residents of our towns the freedom to break away from The City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council (CBMDC), and to form our own Local Authority."

Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for the area and former MP John Grogan told Rombalds Radio that the Bill is 'dead in the water'. He added: "The bill was briefly debated at the end of the parliamentary day last Friday. The government declined to support it which has been their consistent position.

"The bill will formally die when the session of Parliament ends in Autumn 2023 when a new King’s speech is planned before the final session of this Parliament in advance of the election.

"The truth is that the government is increasing the size of councils not reducing them. Craven District Council which includes Skipton is about to be absorbed in a unitary North Yorkshire Council covering the whole of the county."
