Blue Christmas service at Ilkley’s St Margaret’s Church

St Margaret’s church on Queen’s Road will hold its first Blue Christmas Service, a Churches Together in Ilkley initiative, on Thursday, December 22nd at 6.30 pm. All are welcome.

A spokesperson for St Margaret’s said: “The Christmas season is not necessarily a happy time for everyone. Yet it surrounds us – in the shops, on the radio and tv, on the streets of our town. It can be hard to escape and a painful time if you are lonely, bereaved, anxious or worried, unwell, missing a loved one, experiencing the heartbreak of a relationship breakdown or have suffered the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

“Or perhaps you need a moment or two to stop and reflect. To let go of your busy lives for an hour or so and take time to simply “be”.

“Our Blue Christmas Service is a quiet and contemplative service, led by Fr Alex Crawford, in the beautiful space of St Margaret’s. It includes silence; prayers; traditional Christmas hymns and comforting readings, and candle lighting.

“It’s an opportunity to come together or to come alone into the warmth and companionship of St Margaret’s, Ilkley’s beautiful church on the side of the moor. It’s a time for reflection and the comfort of knowing you are not alone.

“Traditionally, Blue Christmas services are offered on or near the longest night of the year, around December 21. It’s an opportunity to hold before God anything that makes this time of year difficult for us. We look forward to welcoming you to St Margaret’s.”
