Police are appealing for witnesses following the tragic death of a nine-year-old boy in a collision near Sutton-in-Craven on Friday night.
Officers were called shortly after 9.30pm on Friday 17th September to a report of a collision between on Sutton Lane between Eastburn and Sutton near the junction with Knott Lane.
Emergency services attended, including the air ambulance, but, despite medical treatment, a nine-year-old boy was pronounced deceased at the scene.
It was reported that a white van was in collision with the boy, and another pedestrian who suffered minor injuries, before making off from the scene.
A 49-year-old man later attended at a police station in North Yorkshire and has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He remains in custody at this time.
Detective Sergeant Fiona Allan, of West Yorkshire Police’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, said: “A nine-year-old boy has tragically lost his life and our top priority is supporting his family and ensuring that a thorough investigation is carried out into the events that have led to his death.
“This collision has happened right on the border of West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire and we are keen to speak to anyone who has witnessed this collision or who believes they may have seen the van involved immediately prior to or following this incident.”

Police have released more information and are continuing to appeal for witnesses
The van involved in the hit and run was a white Peugeot Partner van which had been travelling in the Keighley area prior to the collision.
The 49-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving has since been bailed.

Media reports elsewhere have named the boy killed as 9 year old George Lewis, and say he was walking home from an event at the cricket club when he was hit by the van. Flowers and cards have been left at the scene of the crash over the weekend.
