Airedale NHS Trust appoints new directors

Two new directors have been appointed by Airedale NHS Foundation Trust to oversee finance and corporate affairs.

Mike Savage joined the trust on 31st October as Director of Finance and Fiona Barr started on 1st December as Director of Corporate Affairs.

Mike has been Director of Finance at Manchester Royal Infirmary since January 2020, providing financial leadership to invest in seven day clinical service models and consultant of the week in all specialties, and supporting the £40M redevelopment and extension of the emergency department and theatres. Prior to this he was Director of Operational Finance at The Royal Surrey Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Mike, who attended Bradford Grammar School, has also previously worked for a NHS Commissioning Support Unit in Yorkshire, as Chief Finance Officer and then as Customer Delivery Director. His early career was spent at PwC audit and insolvency where he qualified as a chartered accountant; and JP Morgan Chase in London and New York, then taking on a number of Finance Director roles before starting his career in the NHS.

Mike says: “Having grown up in Bradford and Ilkley with family based in Craven, and through the experience gained at Yorkshire and Humber Commissioning Support Unit, I know Bradford District and Craven well and the opportunity to support Airedale and the wider community is an exciting one.”

Fiona, who lives in Ilkley, was previously Director of Corporate Governance at Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT) where she was also a Trustee of the NHFT’s independent Charity.

Fiona is dual qualified in marketing and healthcare governance and has worked in the NHS throughout her career and across all sectors including acute, community, mental health, ambulance service and commissioning, as well as at a national level with NHS England and the Department of Health. She brings a wealth of experience of supporting Boards and working with Governors to Airedale.

Fiona says: "Living locally and having experienced first-hand the services and quality of care that staff at Airedale provide, I am delighted to have joined Team Airedale.  Being able to use the skills and experience I've gained for the benefit of my local Trust and community is a real privilege."

Foluke Ajayi, Chief Executive at Airedale NHS Foundation trust says: “I’m very pleased to welcome Fiona and Mike to Airedale, they bring a wealth of skills and experience with them which will complement our executive team.

"Winter is always a challenging period for the NHS so it’s great to have them join us ahead of that time, to help us navigate through the next few months as they lead us confidently through the complexities of the NHS financial and governance landscape.  They are joining a strong team here at Airedale who I know will give them every support.”
