MP calls for flexibility as Keighley Covid cases total 23 in a week

The Keighley and Ilkley MP has called for a flexible approach to local restrictions as the data shows no new recent cases in the Ilkley, Silsden and Worth Valley areas.

The whole of the Bradford Council local authority area is still subject to restrictions which were introduced at the start of August and are designed to stop the spread of coronavirus between households.

In an online video posted on Sunday afternoon, Robbie Moore said he was pushing for a more localised approach to restrictions based on data - and he confirmed that the restrictions are now to be reviewed weekly.

The decisions to continue with or remove the local rules are made by Bradford Council in conjunction with the district's Director of Public Health, but also have to be signed off by government.

Mr Moore says that Covid cases are not dropping in Bradford, nor in Keighley - which is still reporting new cases.

In the latest week of data (5th to 11th August) there were:

  • 3 new cases in the Riddlesden and East Morton areas
  • 7 new cases in Keighley Central
  • 8 new cases in the Utley area of Keighley
  • 5 new cases in the Oakworth Road and West Lane area of Keighley

However, the Worth Valley, Craven and Ilkley wards have seen no new cases this week and 'haven't done for some time'.

Mr Moore said: "It is my view that a broad brush approach to adopting a boundary, which follows the Bradford Council area, is not the right approach - and I would urge the leadership team at Bradford Council but also government to look at this and scrutinise it in much more detail."

The MP also says he's pushing for flexibility to open up dance studios in Keighley and Ilkley so that organisations providing classes such as pilates and yoga can operate with social distancing in place.

Huge thanks to all across the constituency for your efforts to date in adhereing to the local Covid restrictions which are now applying for a third week. I want to see localised restrictions mean localised, so that areas which are still showing no new Covid cases are not exposed to the same restrictive measures. It is my view that the Bradford District Council Local Authority boundary is not the right approach. I am in constant contact with the Health Secretary and his Team expressing my views on this - and I would also urge Bradford Council to adopt the same approach. I am also pushing for more flexibility when it comes to opening indoor dance studios and spaces which hold pilates and yoga, and gyms to be able to open up where clear social distancing is able to take place and their environments are safe to do so. Please do continue to adhere to the latest guidance and keep up the good work.
