Mayor thanks volunteers for Ilkley war memorial refurbishment

Friends of Ilkley Riverside Parks have refurbished the War Memorial area in Riverside War Memorial Gardens.

“The area was looking sorry for itself, with benches weathered and the bench plaques either hanging off or lost. The main Memorial sign was almost impossible to read and the surrounding areas of paths and embankment overgrown and full of weeds”, said FOIRP Chair, Ed Duguid.

Volunteers from the Group have stripped and repainted the benches, new plaques have been sourced with funds from the Town Council and installed, paths have been trimmed and the Embankment areas cut back ready for some replanting, graffiti on the flagpole painted over.

“It’s been quite a few weeks work with the on and off weather conditions but we are already seeing more people enjoying this area”

Mayor, Mark Stidworthy, who came down to thank the volunteers for their hard work, said “It’s great to see this whole area freshened up and something to be proud of again. It had originally been re-dedicated as part of the Queens Jubilee celebrations on 2012 and was in dire need of a makeover. The Town Council are hoping we can now use the area for a Re-dedication Ceremony on VJ day on the 15th August. We will be letting everyone know if this can go ahead in the near future”

So, where to next for the Volunteers of FOIRP? Firstly, they are off to freshen up the work they did last year down at the Raised beds by the Riverside Hotel, and to finish off the refurbishment of more of the benches and bins down there. Plans are afoot to plant wildflowers on the topside of Riverside Gardens and, once the Lockdown delayed entrance works to East and West Holmes Fields and Riverside Memorial Gardens have been finished, they will be installing brand new Signage which has been designed by local a Graphic Designer, Hattie Clark, who also did the Signage for Darwin Gardens. And finally, the Playground Appeal will soon be back at Full Steam Ahead!

“So we have plenty to be getting on with!” said Ed
