Local covid restrictions back for Ilkley and Silsden from Tuesday

The whole of the Bradford district is returning to a ban on mixing with other households from next week after a rise in coronavirus cases.

Areas including Burley-in-Wharfedale, Ilkley, Addingham, Steeton, Silsden, Oakworth and Haworth had been initially included in the local restrictions from late July but were removed from them again a few weeks later, while the Keighley area remained subject to the restrictions.

From Tuesday next week - 22nd September - all parts of the Bradford district will be banned from socialising with people from outside their own household or support bubble in private homes and gardens. The restrictions are also being re-imposed across Kirklees and Calderdale.

The latest weekly data for the period 7th to 13th September shows there were 19 positive coronavirus cases identified in Silsden and Steeton, 14 in Keighley Central and East and 10 in Crossflatts and Eldwick.

'Addingham and Ilkley Moor' reported 6 new cases, while there were none at all in the Ilkley town ward. Menston & Burley Moor had 3 positive cases in the 7-day period, while there were also 3 in Otley South.

In Skipton Town & East there were 3 cases, while 4 were reported in Sutton & Cross Hills and 6 in Carleton, Cowling & Cononley.

The government says the decisions have been taken 'in close collaboration with local leaders, with many requesting restrictions to help prevent further increase'.

From Tuesday, all residents of the Bradford district will be banned from socialising with other people outside of their own households or support bubble in private venues and gardens. Some wards in Bradford had been exempt from restrictions on gatherings introduced at the start of August, but these wards will now also be subject to the ban.

You will no longer be allowed to socialise with people you do not live with, or are not in a support bubble with, in public venues. This means you cannot socialise with others in pubs, restaurants, cafes, shops, places of worship, community centres, leisure and entertainment venues, visitor attractions or parks. You may attend these venues with people you live with (or are in a support bubble with) but should avoid interaction with others.

Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, said: “Unfortunately infection rates in the whole of Bradford District continue to increase. For that reason we ask people to support the Secretary of State’s decision today to reinstate local restrictions in the nine wards in which he relaxed them on 28 August.

“In the last few weeks it’s been noticeable that, as the infection rate has risen, it has also increased markedly in some of those wards which had previously come out of local restriction. We are an interconnected place and we’re dealing with a virus which travels fast once it gets hold, it doesn’t respect ward or constituency boundaries.

“If you live in the 21 wards that are currently in local restrictions then this latest announcement means that there is no change for you this week. In the nine wards that recently came out of local restrictions, from next Tuesday those residents will go back into the local restrictions and will only be allowed to socialise with their own household, or bubble.

“We are all at risk and everyone needs to continue to stay safe, take the utmost care to minimise the spread of this terrible virus, and protect vulnerable people. The infection rate is rising. Hospital admissions are rising. It is everyone’s responsibility to reduce the risk of COVID-19 spreading. Thank you to residents, staff, the NHS and volunteers across the district for working so hard to reduce infection rates and to support our communities."

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: "We are seeing cases of coronavirus rise fast in Lancashire, Merseyside, West Yorkshire, Warrington, Halton and Wolverhampton. Local leaders in these areas have asked for stronger restrictions to be put in place to protect local people, and we are acting decisively to support them.

"I know these restrictions will make everyday life harder for many, but I know that residents will work together and respect the rules so we can reduce rates of transmission.

"I urge local people to isolate and get a test if you have symptoms, follow the advice of NHS Test and Trace, and always remember ‘hands, face, space’. By sticking to these steps, we will get through this together."
