Local author donates copies of book as charity shops reopen

Yorkshire Cat Rescue is to benefit from a donation of copies of Coco The Cat, written by local author Alison Wainwright.

She's already raised several hundred pounds for the charity through sales of the book, with profits from e-books sold via Google Play going to the animal charity.

Printed copies will be available in the Yorkshire Cat Rescue charity shops in Keighley and Skipton as they reopen today.

Alison told Rombalds Radio: “Charities have suffered from massively reduced fundraising ability ever since the Covid restrictions started.

“When the pandemic hit the UK I wanted to help by donating all the profits from my book sales and supplying copies to other non-profit organisations for them to sell themselves.

“For animal charities which have shops, their income takes a huge hit every time retail is closed down, but the animals are still in their shelters and still need food and medical treatment.”

Writing Coco the Cat also helped Alison cope with the effects of the first lockdown on her mental health, as she was living alone and had recently been made redundant. The book is aimed at 5 to 8 year olds and is based on the true story of a cat called Bingo, who decided to stay in Alison’s new neighbourhood on the outskirts of Bingley rather than move nearer to town with his owners.

Sara Atkinson, CEO of Yorkshire Cat Rescue, whose rehoming shelter is at Cross Roads near Keighley, said: “It really is kind of Alison to donate some of her lovely books to us, we can’t thank her enough. We are sure they will be a big hit with our supporters.”
