Keighley visitor centre plans for KWVR approved by council

A listed water tower at Keighley railway station can be converted into a visitor centre for the heritage railway after the plans were given the green light.

Dating back to 1883, the water tower in Keighley served the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway – now one of the district’s most popular attractions.

Earlier this year the group that runs the railway submitted a planning application to make minor alterations to the tower, opening it up to the public as a visitor centre.

Those plans have now been approved by planning officers.

Officers said: “The Water Tower is of historic and architectural significance. It is a rare structure which complements the historic character of platforms 3 and 4 of Keighley Station.

“The proposal will enable greater use of the structure and the minor changes are justified by the increased public benefit which will result from these works.”

The heritage railway includes stops at Oakworth, Haworth and Oxenhope.
