Haworth Rotary virtual balloon race supports foodbanks

A virtual online balloon race is being run by Haworth and Worth Valley Rotarians and hopes to raise £1,000 for local foodbanks.

Registration has now opened for the balloon race, which will take off on Saturday 19th September and last for a week.

It's £3 per entry, with all money going to support the work of Worth Valley Food Bank based at Haworth’s West Lane Baptist Church and the Keighley Food Bank Partnership which is headed by the Salvation Army.

Prizes will be awarded for the race winners, with meal vouchers at local restaurants, pubs and cafes being offered - including for Cobbles & Clay in Haworth, Azeem's in Keighley, Stefano's in Silsden and Bizzie Lizzie's in Skipton.

Ian Park, President of the Rotary Club of Haworth & Worth Valley, said: “Besides supporting Rotary’s many international and national programmes our club is keen to back local organisations.

“Both Food Banks have been doing amazing work during lockdown and our members are anxious to help them to continue that support. So, I urge you to enter our balloon race.

“We’re incredibly grateful to the 16 local businesses in our area’s hospitality sector who have been generous enough to help us out with prizes even though they have been badly hit by the Covid crisis themselves. Their kindness is amazing!”

Listen to Ian Park from Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary talking to Rombalds Radio:

Rev. Chris Upton from West Lane Baptist Church, Haworth, said: “The Worth Valley Food Bank is very grateful to the Rotarians for their support. Between April and June this year our Food Bank helped 20 single people and 27 couples, including children, and we want be there for people when
they need us.”

Captain Josh Selfe from the Salvation Army, added: “During the last few months of lock down the Keighley Foodbank Partnership has delivered more than 1,500 food parcels to in excess of 3,500 people in Keighley. Hopefully, Rotary’s Balloon Race will enable us to help even more people.”
