Airedale Hospital's 50 for 50 challenge has raised more than £3,000 and has already helped purchase a new item of equipment to make life easier for staff and patients.
The Airedale Hospital and Community Charity launched the appeal in July to mark the hospital's 50th birthday, and asked people to support them by completing different challenges.
Supporters have included:
- The Stripey Badger Bookshop in Grassington who had already donated book vouchers for hospital staff early in the pandemic and were keen to support the hospital again, so during the anniversary week they donated 50p from every book sold to the charity.
- Senior Sister at the trust, Catherine Redman, organised for the children and grandchildren of Acute Assessment Unit staff to draw pictures and get sponsored, and then displayed them all on the unit for patients to see.
- Jane Hill, who works in Intermediate Care at the trust sold 50 masks donated by Asda in Keighley
- Julia Nixon, Clinical Manager for Urgent Care at the trust did 50 days of 50 burpees and 50 squats
- Katie Lister, Head of Communications at the trust walked 50 miles over 27 days including walks in the Lakes, Nidderdale and Swaledale
- Nicola Younger, Receptionist at Ilkley Coronation Hospital cycled 50 miles
Local children were fantastic supporters too:
- Emily Grace Wood from Ilkley walked 50 miles in one week and cycled 50 miles the following week
- Ronnie Hearnhaw from Oakworth and his pug dog Frank walked 50kms using Strava to map their progress, walking a mile a day and were sponsored by family, friends and teachers at Oakbank School.
Half the money will be shared with Friends of Airedale and the other half will be used for staff health and wellbeing. One of the first items to be bought was a set of portable weighing scale so the Dietetics team can weigh people comfortably whilst they are in their wheelchair and even in their own homes as they can take them out on visits.
Jodie Hearnshaw, Fundraising Manager at Airedale NHS Foundation trust says: “We want to say a huge thank you to everyone, people have done so much for us but are still wanting to do more. It’s lovely to see how staff members got involved too, it shows that they really care for the organisation and our patients.”
