A New Ilkley Pride in Diversity group is to be formed during February and the call has gone out for anyone interested in getting involved and supporting to get in touch.
David Shaw, who is the Chair of Ilkley Community Network and Keighley Pride Chair, will be hosting an information meeting in the first week of February, possibly a Wednesday or Thursday evening at The Flying Duck. Registration for the meeting will be required.
David said: “Following Harrogate and Keighley’s example it has been suggested to form a new Ilkley Pride in Diversity Group ready for The Pride month of June to fly Pride flags etc and an Ilkley Pride event the first weekend in July.”
The idea has the initial backing of Ilkley Town Council, Bradford Council (BMDC), Ilkley MP Robbie Moore and Ilkley District Councillors.
David adds: “Plus we have a Community Chest Award from the local BMDC Ward office to help us set this up. There will be a youth element as well as adults. The local BMDC Ward officer Liz Horn will assist us who was involved in the first Keighley Pride back in 2009 when 600 mostly young people attended at Central Hall Keighley. Keighley Pride works closely with Keighley Cougars Rugby League team & has an annual Pride Match with special shirts and celebrations etc.”
The group's mission will be to encompass life and all its diversity; and to empower and encourage all to work and live in a fully inclusive arena within the Ilkley District.
It’s aims are:
•To raise awareness of issues concerning identity and diversity.
•To celebrate diversity within our community.
•To engage the community fully in affirming differences.
•To work towards a fully inclusive community within Ilkley area.
•To encourage and empower all to share their understanding of diversity
If you are interested in registering for the meeting, becoming a member/supporter, assisting with activities, have a question or would like further information please email David Shaw MBE on email@example.com or text/phone 07740797281.
