Body recovered by police looking for missing Keighley hiker

A body, believed to be 74 year old David McCartney, has been found by a farmer near Kettlewell - a week after he was reported missing.

Mr McCartney, from Keighley, failed to return home from a walking expedition last Monday (18th October), sparking a major search involving police, helicopters, mountain rescue and the RAF.

North Yorkshire Police say a farmer contacted police to say he had discovered a body in the Coverhead area, between Kettlewell and Leyburn, late this morning (Monday 25 October). Officers attended a short time later, along with mountain rescue and the body was recovered.

Although formal identification has not been confirmed, officers believe the body to be that of David McCartney. His family has been informed of this news and are being supported. Post mortem tests will be carried out to establish the cause of death, but officers say they believe there are no suspicious circumstances.

A spokesperson said: "We would like to thank members of the public for their assistance with sharing the appeals to find David."
