Part play and part friendly chat around the kitchen table, This Island’s Mine is a story for people living in the towns, cities and villages of Yorkshire’s Aire valley. It’s about memories of growing up here, of leaving and returning, and it’s about how the Airedale shapes us – as river, canal, and railway weave around each other all the way to Skipton.

Barbara and Danny grew up in Dockfield, in Shipley – on a little strip of land sandwiched between the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. With simple props and jokes at each other’s expense, they tell us the story of their “island” home, with its heavy industry and happy memories. But as they reminisce, they find more to what unfolds than nostalgia. Their tale maps out a possible future.

This Islands Mine will tour up the valley for three weeks in September 2021, from Leeds to Bradford to Skipton. This charming canal boat tour forms part of the Aire Rivers Trust’s Developing the Natural Aire (DNAire) project, and is presented in collaboration with Canal Connections CIC and Multi-Story Water.

This is a small show on board a canal barge, with an audience of 12 people maximum.

Performances at 6pm and 8pm on the canal near to Granby Lane, Riddlesden.
