The strings of Skipton Camerata display their virtuosity and versatility in this summer concert, opening with conductor Ben Crick’s arrangement of Schubert’s tempestuous Quartettsatz written originally for string quartet.

Metamorphosen for 23 solo string instruments was composed by Richard Strauss during the closing months of the Second World War. ‘The most terrible period of human history is at an end,’ wrote Strauss in his diary, ‘during which Germany’s 2,000 years of cultural evolution met its doom.’

English music features in the second half. Both Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro pit a solo string quartet against the rest of the strings. Between these, clarinettist Marianne Rawles joins them to play Five Bagatelles by Gerald Finzi.
